Balkan Music

Ethnic music

I perform with international folk and jazz musicians from around the world.
Always attempting to play in a folk-like manner, I like to add special touches to make the music uniquely "my own".

As a part of Valeri Dimchev Trio (Bulgarian folk music) I have performed and recorded "The Bulgarian Tambura" and "Sooner ... Later..." CDs. We have come together because of a common love for the Balkan music which we have been studying for many years.
This music is renowned for its haunting melodies, dense ornamentation, complex rhythms, and original improvisations. The geographical position of the Balkans in southeastern Europe and hundreds of years of Ottoman Turkish rule have created a wealth of influences from both East and West.

" This fine release by a young Bulgarian trio inaugurates a series of releases by this label which attempt to transcend subjects of label or genre. Such a goal may seem ambitious to some, but the sheer amount of talented musicians with just such an ambiguous direction in mind is a pretty compelling argument otherwise. And the artists here are certainly of this ilk, using their considerable talents not only to perform what is recognizably Bulgarian folk music, but also to get into styles of music that, although pleasantly evocative of folk, blues, and acoustic jazz, don't really fit neatly into any one slot. The listener looking for an easy-to-categorize CD subject may also get confused by this recording, as the music featured on the first few tracks hardly gives an indication of the areas the group will be getting into by the end of day's business.
The tracks, all recorded in Bulgaria, include some lovely guitar pieces that have nary a hint of the Eastern rhythms and harmonies that saturate recordings by players such as these. Vocalist Desislava Dimcheva has a cutting, pungently nasal voice that handles the expected curves of this music, but it is guitarist Anton Apostolov that provides most of the surprises in store. A CD that is fine not only for what it includes, but for supplying intriguing hints into future possibilities. "
